This is one of our signature trips for good reason: Let's go see the most beautiful light show on Earth, the Aurora Borealis (The Northern Lights), during an amazing, perfectly designed itinerary that you won't find anywhere else.

1000 Treks has never failed to see the Northern Lights whenever we planned a trip to see them, because we always pick the perfect conditions and locations. Once again, we will be all-but-guaranteed to see the Aurora, not only once but several times.

2023 will be a year of high solar activity (close to solar maximum), and in 2023 spring equinox will happen during the new moon. Those are three of the most powerful elements for the best Northern Lights viewing. The next time this will happen will be in 2031!

Due to its location in the Aurora Oval, and clear weather conditions (very important), Fairbanks, Alaska is considered by many to be the single best place on the entire planet to see the Northern Lights.

As if that wasn't enough, we will do that as part of an action-packed, exhilarating and unique itinerary.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Go on SIX Northern Lights outings to comfortable locations with cabins or yurts for us to keep warm wile seeing the Aurora.

- Ride the Trans Alaska Railroad through the Alaskan wilderness. One of the most beautiful train rides in the world.

- Go to Chena Hot Springs, a hot spring resort in the middle of the snow.

- Cross the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights from the Arctic.

- Optional activities such as:

              - Visiting the Aurora Ice Museum, which was once the original Aurora Ice Hotel.

              - Dog sledding.

              - Riding a snow mobile.

              - Seeing ice sculptures at the World Ice Art Championship

              - Ice fishing

SUNDAY, MARCH 19: TRANSFER TO CHENA HOT SPRINGS RESORT | FREE DAY | NORTHERN LIGHTS OUTING #2: NORTHERN LIGHTS FROM THE HOT SPRINGS

Northern Lights Chena 1

Leave at 11:00 AM to Chena Hot Springs Resort, where we will stay for the next two days. Arrive at Chena at around 1:00 PM and have the rest of the day free. Chena Hot Springs Resort is a gorgeous place with infinite activities to enjoy. We can go snowshoeingcross-country skiing around the beautiful landscape, snowmobilingdog sledding, visit the Ice Museum, visit the kennel (a definite favorite!), or simply soak in the hot springs. After dinner we will have our Northern Lights outing #2, where we will go to the hot springs and see the Northern Lights from there. To be honest, we won't get the best view from inside the springs due to the steam from the springs, so the lights have to be fairly strong in order for us to see them well. However, if they are, seeing the Northern Lights while soaking in a natural hot spring in100 degrees water surrounded by snow will be one of the greatest experiences you will have in your lifetime!

MONDAY, MARCH 20 (EQUINOX): FREE DAY AT CHENA HOT SPRINGS RESORT | NORTHERN LIGHTS OUTING #3: AURORA VIEWING SNOW COACH TOUR

Snow Coach 2

Full free day at Chena Hot Springs Resort to continue enjoying this amazing place. At night we will go on Northern Lights Viewing #3, which is going to be another one of the most amazing experiences we will ever have: we will hop on a snow coach, a tank-like vehicle that will take us up the mountain, where we will have a completely unobstructed view of the completely dark sky on spring equinox to see the Aurora. We can never make promises with nature, but this is as close to perfection as we can get to see the most incredible Northern Lights spectacle you can ever imagine. The last time these conditions happened was in 2015 and we were there to see it (of course, because we are 1000 Treks ;-)). The show was so spectacular, some people actually cried.

TUESDAY, MARCH 21: TRANSFER BACK TO FAIRBANKS | SEE THE WORLD ICE ART CHAMPIONSHIP. NORTHERN LIGHTS OUTING #4: CHANDALAR RANCH | OPTIONAL ICE FISHING

Late in the morning we'll be shuttled back to Fairbanks. In the afternoon we will go see the World Ice Art Championship, the world's largest ice sculpture championship, where we will see unbelievable ice sculptures done by the best ice sculptors in the world. In the evening, we will go on Northern Lights outing #4 to Chandalar Ranch, a ranch outside the city, which has a large outdoor space as well as a north-facing balcony, from which to enjoy unobstructed views of Aurora’s magnificence.

We will also have a super cool optional (extra cost) addition for the night: ice fishing! Chandalar Ranch is near a lake, and those of us who would like to will go to the lake where we will make a hole in the four-foot thick ice and fish through that hole. We will make ice holes in the open, but will also have a hut set up on the ice, so if it's a particularly cold night, we can choose to stay inside the hut while fishing. If we catch fish (which we almost certainly will), we can actually prepare it right on the spot and eat it fresh!

If you want to pay for the remaining balance with a credit card, we can accept it, but have to add a 5% fee.

- All trips are governed by our comprehensive contract. You should familiarize yourself with it prior to signing up for any of our trips. You can access it by clicking HERE or visiting https://www.1000treks.com/contract/A link to the contract can also be found at the bottom of all our webpages under CONTRACT.

You will be required to submit proof of insurance no later than (seven) 7 days prior to the start of the trip or you will not be allowed to participate in the Trip and will forfeit all your payments.. Although not part of the requirement, we STRONGLY suggest that you get insurance right away (within 15 days of making your deposit), and that you buy a policy that will cover you in case you need to cancel your trip for any reason.

- Because of the adventurous nature of our trips, our itinerary and some locations are subject to change due to weather, tides, road conditions, logistics, and other unforeseen circumstances. It’s not likely, but it could happen. Whenever we make a change in the itinerary, we will do our best to maintain the integrity of the trip.

COVID-19/CORONAVIRUS

This trip will happen around a time in which a potential resurgence of COVID-19 could affect our plans. COVID-19 has become a tricky element because of the unpredictable nature of the virus. It appears that insurance companies have been very restrictive on their coverage; we know insurance companies do offer coverage for the Coronavirus at an additional premium, but this still remains limited and with caps on reimbursement. Additionally, local suppliers have found themselves in a difficult situation because they often have to make their plans and respective reservations for different activities in advance. Therefore, all they can possibly offer in case 1000 Treks needs to cancel the trip after the final payment due date is a credit for the exact same trip for next year. At the same time, because of the virus's effect on local economies, we have been able to secure pricing that at any other time would be notably more expensive.

We believe it is extremely unlikely that we will have to cancel this trip altogether, even if there is a resurgence of COVID-19 at that time. However, it is a possibility, and we want to be completely transparent about the possible outcome. We also want to be 100% upfront that there is the possibility that a resurgence and extreme measures similar to the ones taken in response to the initial outbreak may drive some of the suppliers out of business. If that's the case, they may be unable to provide us with credit or services. This could alter the itinerary, or even render the trip impossible to take and without refunds or credits provided for a future date. We will always do our best to make everything happen, and, again, although the outlined scenarios are extremely unlikely to occur, ultimately we cannot guarantee they won't.

Proof of a negative COVID-19 test might be required. All travelers must be ready to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test if required by any of the locations we will be visiting, travelling through, or returning to. Noncompliance may result in your removal from the trip without any refunds or compensation, and furthermore may result in imposed quarantine, which might result in loss of airfare and other financial consequences. 1000 Leagues Travel will not be held responsible for any circumstances resulting from failure to provide a negative COVID-19 test whenever required.

Please refer to section 7 of the contract titled COVID-19/CORONAVIRUS (VIRUS) for the limitations of our liability.
